Gay Bathhouse for Homosexual Men
Gay bathhouse, also known as gay saunas or steam bath place, even though they are called bathhouses, one shouldn’t confuse them with public bathrooms where everyone can take bath. Even though lesbian bathhouses are very rare compared to these gay bathhouses; there are some bathhouses in which some nights are arranged for women alone.
A large number of men visit this bathhouse every year, but whatever may be their sexual behaviour, not all of them consider themselves as gay men. These bathhouses have anywhere between 10-20 rooms and some of them are multi storied saunas. Jacuzzi tubs, swimming pools, showers and small private rooms are other important features of these bathhouses.
There are several bathhouses which provide memberships to people who want to have fun with other gay members there. Staff members of these bathhouses don’t provide any sexual activities to its customers. It should take place between its customers only. Earlier this was established in order to discourage prostitution.
History of gay bathhouses goes back to 15th century. But traditional bathhouses date back to 6th century or even earlier. In Greece, there were records of homosexual activities both by men and women alike. During 19th and 20th centuries, bathhouses were used by gay men for having sexual intercourse with other gay members. In olden days, homosexual activity was considered abnormal and people who were taking part in gay or lesbian activities were banished from society. But toady various researches have been made by scientists and these researches have proved that homosexual activity is as normal as heterosexual activity. Sex, whatever might be its nature, is normal and acceptable provided that it takes place between two adults with mutual consent and no one else can interfere between them.
In olden days, men were having sexual intercourse in places like public lavatories, film theatres, public parks, railway and bus stations. it was irritating for other people. So people began to complain about it. That necessitated the need for some private place where people can meet with other gays and have sex and fun.
In 1888, a church, named Everard was converted into a bathhouse in New York City. In earlier days it was not so popular, but people began to use it extensively after 1920s and 1930s. This place is regarded as one of the safest, most beautiful and funniest place for gays in entire America. On 25th may 1977, this bathhouse was damaged by fire and nine men died due to this fire. Because of this mishap, it was closed in 1986.
There was another bathhouse namely Produce Exchange Bath in 1910. There was a famous painter named Charles Demuth was using Lafayette baths as his favourite haunt to which he visited regularly. Thus bathhouses have become an integral part of entire America today. As days pass by, number of gay people is on the rise and that has necessitated the need of new bathhouses.
